Sewing never came easily to Sonya Philip. One of her elementary school homework assignments was to make a giant stuffed pencil. After a week of stitching and scissoring, she handed it over to her mother to finish for her.
Years later, sewing at her home in the Castro District, she put her daughter into a homemade dress, but it got stuck and wouldn't come off. Philip had to use scissors to cut her child out of it.
Yet Philip just couldn't unstitch herself from sewing.
"I just kept coming back to sewing. When we make clothes, we empower ourselves, rather than just passively consuming fast fashion," she says, using a term that aligns factory-made clothes with fast food.
