Each year during "The Nutcracker," dancers from the Peoria Ballet perform seemingly impossible feats on the tips of their toes to romantic music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

A big part of the show's magic comes from the costumes — the dancing mice, an elegant nutcracker, dapper soldiers and ethereal snowflakes. While the audience sees the beauty of the sparkling tulle and satin, the dancers have a completely different perspective on the costumes, many of which had seen better days.

Mary's sister, Catherine, 15, agreed. The costumes were being shored up with safety pins. 

"The safety pins would come apart on stage — the costumes would break on stage," she said. 

The old snowflake costumes are about 15 years old. And while they could be dry-cleaned, repeated cleanings are expensive and tend to wilt tulle, so more often the costumes were spot-cleaned after each performance. 

No one debated the fact that it was time for new costumes — the problem was the expense. A well-made decorated pancake tutu can run well over $1,000. To save money, most of the ballet's costumes were made over the years by volunteers. But that requires skill, especially for a pancake tutu, which is engineered to defy gravity as the dancer performs.
