For the past few days, darque french maid costume antiretroviral therapy centres across the country have been suffering from a shortage of medicines. An increasing number of patients being served by the ART centres is only making matters worse. Doctors in the centres from the city have been redirecting the patients to buy medicines that otherwise would have been provided free of cost to them. The city has three such centres, while a fourth one is being planned to overcome the patients' difficulties.

Replying to a complaint about shortage of medicines at the centres, national programme officer of National AIDS Control Organisation Dr BB Rewari wrote, "We did have some shortage of drugs due to late supplies, but all drugs have now been received at all State AIDS Control Societies. In case there is still a shortage at any sites due to distribution issues, as our partner, PLHA network is requested to inform concerned SACS immediately." Similar shortages are being seen in other ART centres across the country, too.Sources said that the entire supply chain has been affected by the global fund scam. "World Health Organisation had also prescribed a drug different from the one being given at the ART centers around the same time. The stocks of these new medicines were less than the required amount whereas the stocks of the older medicines are still being used whenever there is a deficit of the new one," said a source. However, some of the patients did not want the older medicines and so had to be asked to buy the new ones off the market.

One ART centre should ideally be providing services to less than 2,000 patients, informed Tanuja Fale, programme officer of District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit. The centres at both the hospitals get more than 2,500 patients every day," she said.
